Bedford libraries deserve support, not disparagement

Posted

Dear Editor,

I was offended by "Bedford libraries seek funding increase" (Sept. 18, Page 4).

The tone of the story was particularly negative and arrogant. To say that our libraries are "perennially unhappy" and are trying "to force a far more generous municipal allocation" is uninformed and quite inaccurate. We offer a proposal, not an aggressive mandate.

This new line item on the upcoming Bedford ballot was made possible by New York State Education Law 259, subdivision 1 as amended by Chapter 414. In essence, local libraries now have the opportunity to have a dedicated vote line pertaining solely to library funding. It gives the public the ability to individually approve monetary support for our libraries and the myriad of services and events they provide. Previously, library funding has been bundled into the overall Town of Bedford budget.

This effort did not come easily. Community representatives of the Bedford libraries met several times this year, working and preparing detailed plans for the future to support this vote. Great analysis was given to financial efficiency and the scope of our efforts. The Bedford libraries have every intention to grow and adapt to the needs we foresee in the future. We kindly seek your support.

Mr. Bartley should acquaint himself with his local libraries. We are invaluable community centers where residents of all ages come to meet and greet, become inspired and learn new things. There are book groups, quilting sessions, financial help, concerts, art exhibits, community action committee meetings, computer fix-it sessions and special events to welcome newcomers to Bedford. Why don't you come by and witness a crowd of 75 people on The Bedford Green for a children's story time? We would welcome your visit!

Lifelong learning is a gift like no other. Please support the Bedford libraries funding proposal on the coming November ballot.

-Karl Zuk, Katonah
