Art, live music and Halloween fun are on the October calendar at Mahopac Library, along with workshops on homework help and spotting scams. For information or registration, visit mahopaclibrary.org or call 845-628-2009, ext. 100, unless a different extension is listed below.

MPL at Home — Homework Help: Monday, Oct. 12, 11:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. Mahopac Library cardholders can access help from live tutors from the comfort of home through Brainfuse HelpNow. This class takes a deeper look at the service and how to access live tutors, get robust writing feedback, study materials and practice exams, and personalized learning plans. This class is hybrid. Register to attend in person or virtually.

Lil Creeps Book Club — A Middle School Horror Book Club: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 5 p.m. Join this monthly club to read a book and do a craft associated with the reading. Every meeting takes place in a blanket fort for safety! Teens aren’t required to bring blankets, but are encouraged to do so. Pajamas may also be worn! This month’s book: “Small Spaces” by Katherine Arden. Grades 6-8. Registration: ext. 153.

Friday Film Night for Adults: Friday, Oct. 16, 6 p.m. Join a monthly curated screening! It could be an old Hollywood classic, an international film, a modern trailblazer or something completely different! This month’s screening is “Carrie,” the classic horror film starring Sissy Spacek.

Classic Rock Euphoria Presents “Happy Birthday America”: Sunday, Oct. 18, 2 p.m. In celebration of 250 years of American heritage, Classic Rock Euphoria pays tribute to the spirit of America with a special performance featuring patriotic songs woven into a nostalgic retrospective of 1950s and ’60s rock ’n’ roll. Experience the timeless music of an era while celebrating the songs, spirit and heritage that helped shape America.

Spotting Scams: Monday, Oct. 19, 11:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. In this workshop, participants will learn about three real-life online scams and familiarize themselves with some of the techniques scammers commonly use to access sensitive information. This class is hybrid. Register to attend in person or virtually.

Double Creature Horror Feature — A High School Horror Book and Movie Club: Monday, Oct. 19, 5 p.m. Join this monthly club for a new horror book and movie related to the reading! This month’s book is “Don’t Let the Forest In” by C.G. Drews, and the movie is “There’s Something Wrong with the Children.” Grades 9-12. Registration: ext. 153.

The Hudson Valley UFO Flap and Folklore: Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6 p.m. Join researcher Renee Fleury for a mind-opening journey into the mysterious skies of New York’s Hudson Valley. Explore the region’s infamous UFO flap of the 1980s, alien abduction accounts — including Renee’s own family’s — and the strange dreams that still follow. The program will dive into the area’s paranormal hot spots, stone chamber legends and the curious geology that may explain why the Hudson Valley seems to hum with otherworldly energy. Is this historic region a true vortex? Come hear stories that are truly out of this world.

Celebrate Halloween with Jester Jim: Thursday, Oct. 22, 4:30 p.m. Families with children ages 4 and older are invited to come in costume to the library for a hilarious juggling and comedy extravaganza! Drop in before or after the show to create Halloween slime at the Slime Lab. Registration is required: ext. 139.

Archaeology of Magic, Rituals and the Occult: Saturday, Oct. 24, noon. Join archaeologist Eugene Boesch for an intriguing exploration of the ancient origins of ritual, magic and the occult. Through a fascinating collection of art, artifacts, objects, human remains and archaeology, Boesch will examine how these discoveries provide insight into ancestral beliefs and practices — some dating back as far as 1 million years.

Teen Horror Movie Festival: Monday, Oct. 26, 5:30 p.m. Teens can submit a film based on the theme: Candy! All movie submissions are due Monday, Oct. 19, by 7:30 p.m. See the library website for more details. Registration: ext. 153.

America’s Best Idea? The National Parks: Wednesday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. Join Richard W. Benfield, a former professor of geography at Central Connecticut State University, for a deep dive into America’s national parks. Drawing from his years of teaching and travel, Benfield will show the nature of America’s best idea!

The Immortals Ball — Teen Murder Mystery Party: Friday, Oct. 30, 5:30 p.m. Teens are cordially invited to attend the Hidden Council’s annual costume ball! This is the social event of the year. The royalty of the Mage Guild, Were Clans, Vampyr Houses and Fae Court will be in attendance. As always, when the Immortal Court gathers, expect political intrigue, barbed innuendos, backstabbing and betrayal. So the same as any other day among royalty. It is whispered that there will be a special meeting of the Hidden Council at this year’s annual costume ball to address the recent Watcher murders. Watchers are important to the Immortals and help keep their existence hidden from humanity. The Immortals, in turn, have sworn to protect the Watchers for their service. Grades 8-12.
