Members of the New York State Police Troop K Traffic Incident Management Unit, in partnership with the New York State Department of Transportation, conducted an Operation Hard Hat enforcement detail Thursday along the Taconic State Parkway in Yorktown, where DOT crews were performing guide rail repairs, according to New York State Police.
During the three-hour enforcement effort, troopers issued 64 tickets, including 49 for speeding, 10 for violations of New York's Move Over Law and five for other traffic offenses. The highest speed recorded was a motorcycle traveling nearly 89 mph through the work zone, state police said.
Operation Hard Hat is a statewide initiative aimed at improving safety in highway work zones by reducing reckless and distracted driving. The program is designed to protect highway workers, emergency responders and motorists traveling through active work areas.
State police reminded motorists to slow down, remain alert, move over for stopped emergency and highway vehicles, avoid distractions and obey all posted signs and speed limits when traveling through work zones.
