SOMERS, N.Y. - Last week, the Tuskers’ undefeated season finally came to an end at Yorktown.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Caitlin Fitts. “They are a good team.”
But afterward, the conversation turned inward and the team reached a consensus.
“We can’t be so chill,” Fitts added.
On Monday, May 11, Westlake was on the receiving end of the Tuskers’ renewed intensity.
Somers scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, and cruised to an 18-0 victory.
The game began in familiar fashion. Julia Peanamanda led off with an infield single, and Gianna Peanamanda followed with a bunt base hit.
An overthrow at first moved both runners into scoring position, and Katie Cole kept things simple in the three spot. Her groundout to third brought home Julia, and moments later the sisters were reunited in the dugout. Fitts followed with a single up the middle, driving in Gianna for a 2-0 lead.
Somers kept rolling. Emily Boyle’s sacrifice fly advanced Fitts, and Keira Griggs added another run with a single.
Westlake did open the bottom of the first with a leadoff single, but Boyle never wavered. The starter recorded a called strikeout, snagged a line drive back to the circle, and watched Cole handle an easy grounder at shortstop to end the inning.
Somers had no problem accepting some help to start the second. Brooke Olivier, Mia DiChiaro, and Alyssa Pirraglia all drew walks, and with nobody out, Gianna Peanamanda and Cole were eager to swing away. The pair delivered back-to-back doubles to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Boyle looked equally comfortable protecting the advantage. After issuing a leadoff walk, the Tusker pitcher induced a groundout to first, fielded another grounder herself, and picked up her second strikeout of the game.
In the top of the third, Boyle contributed at the plate as well, leading off with a single to spark another rally. Griggs walked, Kaleigh Conti lined an RBI single to right, and Olivier followed with a long RBI double.
Pirraglia made it 10-0 with a groundout to short, and Westlake could only hope to avoid further damage. Another Boyle quickly ended that possibility.
“The first pitch I saw, I swung,” said Caitlin Boyle, whose double put runners on second and third.
Off the bench, Rachel Lantz had a similar approach.
“I was really looking to hit,” said the junior third baseman, whose bloop single behind third allowed DiChiaro to score.
Lantz drove in the 12th run of the game, and after Somers recorded the final three outs in the fifth inning, Fitts was already looking ahead.
“I’m hoping for a bunch more wins,” she said.
