SOMERS, N.Y. - The results of the Somers Fire District’s annual elections are in.
There were three candidates vying for one seat on its five-member board of commissioners.
The winner was Anthony “Tony” Sutton, with 84 votes. Michael Vigliotti had 83 and John Chrysogelos Jr., the incumbent, 29.
The turnout was said to be impressive compared with past contests.
Voters overwhelmingly passed two propositions on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Amawalk Fire House.
Proposition 1 amends the general municipal law to allow the Somers Fire District to establish a capital reserve fund to finance the cost of general EMS operations, capital expenses and equipment, and training.
Proposition 2 authorized the board to sell a 2005 Spartan/Gladiator rescue truck that had been declared as surplus for “a sum in excess of $100,000.
Commissioners serve five-year terms. They are responsible for managing the district’s financial and operational aspects. They make decisions about the budget, ensure that there’s adequate equipment and training for first responders, enforce fire codes, handle personnel matters, and more.
“I’m really very honored to be able to help the fire district in any way I can. I hope my past experience positions me to be able to provide that help,” Sutton said on Thursday, Dec. 12 adding: “The fire service in this country is under tremendous pressure because there’s increased activity and fewer volunteers.”
