SOMERS, N.Y. — The Somers wrestling team turned in an impressive week on the mat, cruising past Port Chester, surviving a tight dual against Harrison, and placing fourth overall at the 11th Annual Westchester Championship against one of the deepest fields in the county.
Somers opened the stretch on Wednesday, Jan. 21, with a dominant 61–30 road victory over Port Chester. The Tuskers won 10 of the 16 contested bouts, eight by fall, as they steadily pulled away from the Rams.
Rylan Steuber sparked the lineup at 103 pounds with a 7–4 decision, followed by a pin from Ethan Steuber at 118. Loghan Dwyer added a major decision at 126, and Robert DeCamp, Andrew Dontje, Ryan Ball, Cal Ehrmann, Derek Kuchinsky, Joe Simoncini and Michael Soliman all recorded falls. TJ Mauro closed out the night with a pin at 190.
Two days later, Somers edged Harrison, 44–36, in a back-and-forth league dual that was not decided until the closing weights. Pins from Ethan Steuber (118), Ryan Ball (138), Cal Ehrmann (144) and Derek Kuchinsky (150) provided crucial points, while Dwyer dominated at 126 with a technical fall and Robert DeCamp earned a decision at 132. Mauro once again delivered a key pin at 190 to help Somers hold off Harrison down the stretch.
The week culminated on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the 11th Annual Westchester Championship, where Somers finished fourth out of 28 participating schools, a strong showing in one of the area’s most competitive tournaments.
The Tuskers crowned two individual county champions. Ethan Steuber captured the 110-pound title with four straight pins, earning his second career county championship. Cal Ehrmann claimed the championship at 144 pounds, marking the first varsity tournament title of his career.
Derek Kuchinsky reached a major milestone during the tournament, recording the 100th varsity win of his career in the quarterfinal round at 150 pounds. Somers also produced four additional All-County finishers: TJ Mauro placed second at 190, Loghan Dwyer finished third at 118, Ryan Ball earned third at 144, and Kuchinsky added a fourth-place finish at 150.
Across the three meets, Somers showcased depth throughout the lineup and strong postseason form, using dominant performances in the middle weights and key bonus-point victories to establish itself as a contender heading into the final stretch of the season.
