Somers relay team headed to states for the first time since 2007

SOMERS, N.Y. - As a 2005 graduate of Somers High School and a former runner on this team, this program and school district hold a profound place in my heart. They truly helped shape me into the man I am today. Now, in my 17th year coaching at Somers, having the opportunity to guide the next generation of Tuskers to achievements like this is an incredible honor.

For the first time in nearly two decades—since 2007—the boys 4x800-meter relay team is heading to the New York State Championships. Not only did they punch their ticket, but they also became the fastest 4x800 relay squad I have ever coached.

The team of Aidan, Lenny, Gabe, and Christian delivered a spectacular performance, crossing the finish line in 8:06.26. That blazing time ranks as the sixth-fastest outdoor 4x800 relay in school history. Back at the Yale Invitational in the winter of 2025, this group set a vision and committed to the work. Today, that dedication paid off in the biggest way possible.

Adding to the championship roster, Ethan Steuber put together a masterclass performance in the pole vault. Ethan cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to earn his second consecutive trip to the State Championships. Returning to the state meet for a second straight year is a rare and extraordinary accomplishment that speaks volumes about his consistency, work ethic, and elite athletic ability. He has firmly established himself as one of New York’s premier vaulters and a foundational leader of our team.

These five young athletes represent the very best of our program. They are among the hardest-working individuals I know, and their sacrifice, grit, and discipline have earned them this moment.

We head to the State Championships this weekend, and I cannot wait to see what these boys can do on the biggest stage. It is going to be an unforgettable weekend.
