SOMERS, N.Y. - More than 800 high school students from Westchester and Putnam counties will present advanced STEM research projects at the 25th annual Regeneron–Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF), the nation’s largest regional high school science fair.
The competition will take place Saturday, March 14, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Somers High School and Somers Middle School. An awards ceremony will follow on Wednesday, March 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the high school.
Students from more than 40 high schools will showcase graduate-level research in a competitive poster format. Most participants are juniors and seniors enrolled in their schools’ science research programs. Projects will be judged by local experts in life sciences, physical sciences, environmental studies, psychology, and engineering.
Twenty top projects will earn spots at the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest high school STEM competition. This year’s international competition will be held in May in Phoenix, Arizona, bringing together more than 1,700 students from over 60 countries.
Four additional projects will advance to the International Genius Olympiad, an international competition focused on sustainability in energy, environment, engineering, and global health. More than 600 students from over 70 countries participate annually.
Members of the public are invited to view student presentations from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on March 14.
The fair is made possible through significant support from local corporate and community sponsors. Lead funding comes from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Con Edison. Additional sponsors include IBM, Westchester Academy of Medicine, Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation, Teatown, Bobo’s Café, DataClassroom, Edward Jones (Mt. Kisco), Leason Ellis, Somers Education Foundation, and Science Research Academy LLC.
In total, sponsors have donated nearly $200,000 to support this year’s event, allowing WESEF to award nearly 60 percent of participating students with some form of recognition.
