SOMERS, N.Y. - Benny Silk has loved sports since he could remember, and in the last few years, the Somers senior realized talking sports was a career he wanted to pursue. So last spring he decided there was no reason to wait.
He met with Ms. O’Shea, who runs the clubs, and pitched the idea for a sports talk broadcast. By May, the SHS Sports Broadcasting Club was born. “We do talk show episodes each week, and broadcast the varsity football games,” said Silk.
Mr. Cleary was the adult in charge last year, and on the student side, Brandon Nappi entered on the ground floor.
“He’s been part of this from the beginning,” said the founder and president of the club.
Silk also credited Jayden Ferry for taking care of the nitty gritty.
“He manages technical stuff for our broadcasts,” Silk clarified.
In front of the mic too, there has been a shift at the top, though. Mr. Hattem is now the advisor, and Silk is grateful that the Athletic Director continues to provide space and support.
A schedule that includes a weekly meeting to plan.
“We discuss talk show ideas, get ready to interview guests and go over the latest in the world of sports,” said Silk.
One Juan Soto soon to be a topic, the host has an early weigh in.
“I don’t know honestly if the Mets are going to work out,” said the Red Sox fan.
Patriots too, he’s simply following alongside his father’s sports fanaticism. So Tom Brady obviously a hero, he has another QB in mind for a broadcasting role model.
“Tony Romo,” said Silk, “how he does a game is very entertaining.”
Of course, both professionals do their due diligence and so does Silk.
“Each week, I meet with Coach DeMatteo and come up with a bunch of questions for the game,” said the color man “I do my research based on that.”
Play by play too, the whole team is looking to learn so they switch roles during games. The same goes when the broadcasters play the big time.
“It was an amazing experience of a lifetime,” said Silk of their broadcast at the JMA Dome for the football state finals.
Of course, he had big thanks for Mr. Hattem for setting up the broadcast at Syracuse, and the same goes for the rest of his team.
Phillip Rosado is the club secretary and talk show contributor, Mark Tengstrom is the cameraman for football broadcasts and episodes and gets help behind the camera from Chris Frey and Matt Giliberti. In addition, Dylan Posadas and Michael Cardillo work behind the scenes, and Jack Dwyer was a big part last year before going off to college. “There are a lot of other people that help make this happen,” the host concluded.
