SOMERS, N.Y. - Somers and state DOT officials are meeting today (June 30) to review the status of the Route 202 culvert replacement project after its anticipated Monday, June 29, start was delayed because of utility work.
Supervisor Robert Scorrano said that once the town has confirmed an updated construction schedule or any changes to traffic impacts, it will share that with the public.
Verizon crews were on site yesterday completely utility work, including the removal of telephone poles.
Once construction starts, Route 202 will be closed between Firemen’s Field and Somers Middle School.
Drivers were urged to follow the posted detour routes and traffic signage to "ensure safe and efficient travel," they said.
The project is expected to take eight weeks to complete.
To improve safety while work is underway, the town’s Highway Department has installed temporary stop signs on Lovell Street, about 50 feet north and south of Westridge Drive.
Motorists are reminded to obey all posted traffic signs, reduce their speed, and use extra caution when traveling through the area.
The state DOT had originally wanted to start the multi-million-dollar endeavor in February but agreed to hold off until school was out for the summer.
If it hadn’t, the project could have impacted 19 different school bus routes.
That would have meant keeping some children in transit for an additional 35 or 45 minutes.
