SOMERS, N.Y. - The Somers community is remembering Nick DeLucia as a man whose life was defined not simply by what he accomplished, but by the people and community he chose to serve. He was a member of the Somers Lions Club for more than 40 years, and he shared that his greatest joy as a Lion was working with friends to host events such as the Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invitational Track Meet and Independence Day.
For years, DeLucia was a familiar and dedicated presence in Somers, giving his time, energy and friendship to causes that strengthened the community and brought people together. His commitment to service was reflected through his work with the Somers Lions Club, where the simple principle of helping others became a lasting part of his legacy.
DeLucia understood that a strong community is built through people who are willing to step forward. Through the Lions, he was part of efforts that reached well beyond individual projects, supporting the organization’s longstanding tradition of service, fellowship and giving back.
That spirit was especially evident in the Lions’ work honoring DeLucia’s late wife, Fedora, a respected community leader whose own contributions to Somers included service on the Planning Board and Master Plan Committee, as well as advocacy for seniors, open space and environmental protection.
Nick’s connection to service also extended to the broader community. He was a familiar presence at local traditions and civic events, including Somers’ Memorial Day observances, where he helped honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Nick always attended the observances, despite the weather, to honor his fellow veterans.
But perhaps the greatest measure of Nick DeLucia’s life is not found in a list of titles or achievements. It is found in the example he leaves behind — the willingness to volunteer, to remember others, to support neighbors and to keep showing up when a community needs someone to help.
That example will continue through the Somers Lions Club. The Lions’ work is, at its heart, about carrying service from one generation to the next. Nick’s legacy will live on in the projects undertaken, the people helped and the community strengthened by those who follow his example.
In Somers, a legacy is not necessarily a monument. Sometimes it is a helping hand, a community project, a moment of remembrance or a volunteer who quietly makes a difference. Nick DeLucia leaves behind all of those things and, most importantly, a standard of service for others to follow.
His work may have ended, but his example remains.
