Somers comes up short in battle of Tuskers and Huskers

Posted

SOMERS, N.Y. - On Tuesday, April 14, Yorktown came across town and traded runs with their hosts. The Huskers scored five of the first six goals, and Somers nearly returned the favor with five of the next seven, setting up a fierce 7-6 battle. But the momentum shift that followed did not favor the Tuskers.

Yorktown scored the next six goals and went on to hand Somers a 15-9 loss.

The game began with something the Tuskers couldn’t solve. After Khloe Clarkin sent the opening draw upward, the first of many loose balls was secured by Lily Diaz.

Moments later, Yorktown stepped into the passing lanes. From behind the net, Annie Cunneen waited, and on the cut, Juliet Horton received the pass. In stride, the midfielder fired, giving Yorktown a 1-0 lead.

Just 28 seconds in, the game settled into a back-and-forth rhythm over the next four minutes, with turnovers on both ends. An errant Somers pass on offense put the Huskers back on the attack at 7:52.

Yorktown set up, and Sydney Sateriale decided not to wait. She charged through traffic and drew a penalty, then converted to extend the lead to 2-0.

At 6:58, Diaz tracked down another draw, but Yorktown ran into resistance. On the penalty restart, Sateriale readied, but Emma Donaldson made an easy save with 6:10 left in the first.

Unfortunately for Somers, transition defense continued to be an issue. Diaz came up with another loose ball, and Cunneen soon converted on a penalty shot at 4:22.

Diaz dominated the draw again and even won her own scramble. Though she initially lost control on her rush to goal, she recovered and scored at 2:54.

After four straight Yorktown goals, Somers made a change in the circle. Sofia Conner entered and won the draw, setting up Amelia Marcus. Swinging left, the eighth-grader unleashed a shot to get the Tuskers on the board at 2:30.

Diaz responded once more, collecting another ground ball before Ava Ryan and Megan Durante executed a perfect pick-and-roll. Durante finished to restore Yorktown’s four-goal lead.

With 1:53 remaining, Somers showed its transition game. After a steal by Mia Paulmeno, the Tuskers pushed the fast break. Kate Barton found Bella Mancini on the left, and Julia Fitzsimons finished the play.

With 25 seconds left in the quarter, Somers kept pushing. Conner won the draw, drew a penalty, and scored to close the gap to 5-3 heading into the second.

Donaldson opened the second quarter with a strong save, snaring a shot from Sateriale on the right.

After more turnovers, Caitlyn Mayfield took control. Driving from the left against heavy pressure, she forced in a goal to make it 5-4 at 9:51.

Diaz answered immediately, securing the draw and capitalizing after a scramble in front to push the lead back to two.

At 9:18, Diaz struck again, but Donaldson responded shortly after. Following a Conner draw win, Diaz intercepted a pass and forced a penalty, but lost control of the ball, allowing Donaldson to recover.

Donaldson came up big again moments later, and Mayfield went back to work. After weaving through defenders, she found Conner inside, cutting the deficit to one at 5:29.

However, Yorktown maintained its edge. Megan Durante broke through the defense to give the Huskers a 7-5 lead.

With 4:47 remaining in the half, Conner gained possession, leading to another Mayfield-led attack. She waited patiently before finding Paulmeno alone in front, and the senior finished to bring Somers within one at 3:38.

A chance to tie slipped away when Conner was called for a charge after a Mayfield draw win. Yorktown capitalized, as Durante set up Sateriale for an easy goal at 2:43.

Diaz continued to dominate the draws, and after sustained pressure led to a penalty, Sateriale found Ryan inside. Ryan maneuvered past the defender and slipped an underhand shot past Donaldson.

With 72 seconds left in the half, Yorktown wasn’t done. Following a whistle restart, Ryan’s run down the right side capped the half with a 10-6 lead.

Durante extended the lead early in the third, pushing it to five. Somers held that margin for much of the quarter until Diaz once again made an impact, scooping a loose ball that led to Sateriale’s goal, making it 12-6 at 1:36.

A Somers turnover further widened the gap. Ryan received a long cross-field pass and scored uncontested with just 1.5 seconds left in the third.

Somers mounted a late push, with goals from Mancini, Mayfield, and Paulmeno cutting the deficit to 13-9. But a key save on Mayfield with three minutes remaining halted the momentum. Ryan added another goal at 2:41, sealing the outcome.

Despite the loss, the Tuskers showed resilience and had plenty to build on moving forward.
