SOMERS, N.Y. - An eventful few days saw members of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department respond to 21 calls, including a motor vehicle fire, a traffic accident, a fallen tree, and several medical emergencies.

The most serious incident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Monday, May 19, when the SVFD was called to Heritage Hills and Lovell Street after receiving reports of a minivan in flames.

Units on the scene discovered that the vehicle’s fuel tank had ruptured, and needed to use both a hose and foam to extinguish the blaze.

An additional tanker from the Mahopac Fire Department as well as an ambulance from Somers EMS were also called. While members of the SVFD operated at the scene, the Yorktown Fire Department covered additional calls.

Firefighters were on the scene for almost two hours, assisted by the Somers Police Department and Department of Environmental Protection Police.
