SOMERS, N.Y. - There are three folks vying for one spot on the Somers Fire District’s board of commissioners this year.
The annual election will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Amawalk Firehouse, 1 Liberty Way.
The candidates are John Chrysogelos Jr., who is running for re-election; Anthony Sutton, and Michael Vigliotti.
There are five commissioners on the board. They serve five-year terms.
According to the board’s chairman, Eric Zohar, commissioners are responsible for managing the district’s financial and operational aspects.
They make decisions about the budget and ensure that there’s adequate equipment and training for first responders.
They also enforce fire codes, handle personnel matters, and “prioritize the safety and well-being of the community that serve,” he added.
Folks will also be asked to vote on two propositions.
Proposition 1 would amend the general municipal law to allow the Somers Fire District to establish a capital reserve fund to finance the cost of general EMS operations, capital expenses and equipment, and training.
If passed, the district’s treasurer would be directed to deposit money in the reserve fund into a separate bank account to be known as “EMS Operations Reserve Fund.”
The treasurer would also be authorized to invest, from time to time, money in the fund pursuant to general municipal law.
No expenditure shall be made from this fund, except upon authorization of this board, pursuant to a permissive referendum.
Proposition 2 would authorize the board to sell a 2005 Spartan/Gladiator rescue truck that had been declared as surplus for “a sum in excess of $100,000.
