SOMERS, N.Y. - This weekend, Somers will celebrate The Elephant Hotel’s 200th birthday in style.
The beloved local landmark will host a bicentennial celebration organized by the Somers Historical Society on Saturday, May 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The day will begin with an opening ceremony on the front steps, followed by building tours, music, crafts, cake and ice cream.
There will also be a special appearance by the ArtsWestchester ArtsMobile from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., sponsored by White Plains Hospital and Westchester County.
The former version of the Old Bet sculpture, displayed from 1938 to 2024, will also be on display during the festivities.
The festivities will also include the debut of the “Kids Hamlet Tour.” Created by Eagle Scout candidate James Maoriello, this special attraction will allow visitors to take a self-guided tour by using a special QR code. Scouts will also be on hand at each location.
Built between 1820 and 1825 by Hachaliah Bailey, The Elephant Hotel was purchased by the Town of Somers in 1927, was named a National Historic Landmark in 2005, and is currently home to The Somers Historical Society and Town Hall.
The celebration will also come as part of the observation of National Preservation Month, which was established in 1973 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to encourage communities across America to foster an appreciation of the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. This year's theme is "Preserve the Past, Shape the Future: Inspiring the Next Generation."
