SOMERS, N.Y. - Last season, the boys soccer team qualified for the sectionals. Unfortunately, the Tuskers made a quick first-round exit, but the experience left a lasting impression.
Losing only five seniors, Coach Robert Carreira said, “We have a strong core of returning guys, and we’re supporting that with quite a few underclassmen. So I’m really excited.”
In goal, the team has depth and experience. “I’ll have two goalies to choose from, both with their own advantages,” he said of Benn Baran and Nick Chao.
That’s a definite leg up from last year, the coach said.
“If Benn was sick, we had no backup so not having that headache will be fantastic,” said Carreira.
Connor Sheldon provides stability on defense as well. A captain last year, Sheldon earned high praise from his coach.
“An amazing young man, he’s got a great head on his shoulders, is a natural leader, and there’s just a presence about him,” Carreira said.
Alongside him, Eddie Ruiz should be a strong complement.
“He’s a very technical player,” Carreira asserted.
Up the field, Kenji Todo enters the season after a strong offseason.
“He’s in fantastic shape, and he’s really great at midfield,” said Carreira.
On the wing, Harper Ritson returns.
“Hard working, he’s a really intelligent player and definitely a creative spark,” the coach said of the tri-captain.
The midfield then transitions to the team’s third captain, Trevor Kermit, whose work ethic and presence have inspired the team motto: “Don’t lose that grit,” Carreira said.
From JV, Kaon Demaj is rising to the varsity level.
“I think this year is going to be a breakout season in the way he’s been playing and understanding the game,” Carreira said.
There will also be three freshmen getting the call-up.
“It really speaks to the town history and commitment to soccer,” Carreira explained.
Among the graduating absences is James Brinn.
“He was the glue of the team and built morale,” said Carreira.
But it turns out the 2026 graduate isn’t really gone.
“It’s really trickled down to the seniors,” he said. “They are so committed.”
With a competitive league ahead, Carreira isn’t shying away from the challenge.
“I don’t see why we won’t be in the mix,” the coach concluded.
