SOMERS, N.Y. - May 10 was a perfect day for baseball, and Somers got to play two at the high school. Unfortunately, by the time the picturesque Saturday ended, the Tuskers might have hoped they played none.
First versus Brewster, the boys lost a suspended 11-11 tie by a final of 18-14 and then got mauled by the Wolf Pac of Mahopac by a score of 12-0.
Mahopac didn’t wait to get started either. With one out, Nate Mascoll doubled down the third base line against Rhys Carway and scored on a bloop double by Drew Lichtenberger. One more double to go, Jack Moeller did the honors, and Mahopac took a 2-0 lead onto the field.
RJ Grabeklis looked like he was going to give it right back, though. He walked Jake Hopper, threw two wild pitches and hit Alex Hoffman and Tyler Venturini. So, with one out and the bases loaded, Lorenzo D’Ambrosio came up ready to do some damage. But he bounced back to the box and Grabeklis turned a 1-2-3 double play.
Onto the second, both pitchers settled down. Six up, six down, but the quiet was over for the visitors, and the top of the order led the way again. Vince Cataldo walked, Mascoll doubled him to third, and Lichtenberger singled to left for a 3-0 lead.
Worse yet, Grabeklis didn’t go anywhere. Except for a two-out double by Venturini, the Mahopac starter struck out the side, and twice Somers failed to get the bat off their shoulders.
Not the case for Mahopac. They came out in the fourth with their clubs swinging. Anthony Eppolito singled to right, and Grabeklis' sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a run on Gavin Kelly’s throwing error.
The Somers charity wasn’t over either. First and third, Cataldo took off for second, and Joe Dwyer’s throw sailed high. Now 5-0, Somers had to contend with the usual suspect again. Mascoll singled to right for a 6-0 lead and more miscues were on the way.
A hit by pitch, an error and a balk made it 8-0, and all Somers could fall back on was the mercy rule. That came on a walk by Eppolito in the sixth, and the Tuskers had to be satisfied to fight another day.
