SOMERS, N.Y. - Alfred B. DelBello Muscoot Farm Park in Somers recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala and a two-day festival complete with music, hayrides, blacksmithing/knitting/spinning demonstrations, stories, and both wild and farm friends.

County Executive Ken Jenkins spoke about the history of the farm, which was started by the Hopkins family in 1880 and taken over by the county in the late 1960s.

Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor and farm manager Jonathon Benjamin thanked the staff and supporters of the beloved Somers venue as did County Legislator Erika L. Pierce.

Jenkins presented a proclamation from the Board of Legislators that praised Muscoot’s “contributions to agricultural education and heritage preservation and its bright future as a place of learning, community, and discovery for generations to come.”

Similar proclamations were being sent by state Assemblymen Chris Burdick and Matt Slater.

Saturday, Sept. 20, was declared “Muscoot Farm Day” in Westchester.

Naturalist Chris Evers of North Salem’s Animal Embassy brought along some fascinating critters. Master storyteller Jonathan Kruk enthralled both young and old in the crowd with his tales.

Anne Swaim of Saw Mill River Audubon led a bird walk and James Eyring demonstrated the art of falconry.

Bug, butterfly, and flower-shaped cookies were painted (and consumed) with the help of baker Caitlin Monachino. Blacksmithing and knitting were demonstrated. Bees and raptors were on display. And a silent auction was held Sunday at a dinner attended by more than 200 people.

Folks boogied to the bands Citigrass and Quasi Normal.

Not to be forgotten – the living museum’s regular farmers market and its latest exhibit: “The ABCs of Muscoot Farm.”

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company even showed up with a special beer crafted out of Muscoot’s own honey. Sweet!
