SOMERS, N.Y. - Future veterinarian Lou Meza was celebrated as a PNW BOCES Student of Distinction, not only for his academic performance, but also for the compassion and professionalism he displays with working with animals.

The Somers High School senior was presented with a medal and a certificate at the Board of Education’s May 26 meeting by Dr. Andrew J. Ecker, PNW BOCES’ new career and technical education director.

Introducing the honoree was Dr. Gregory Brown, PNW BOCES assistant superintendent.

“I am particularly honored as this is my first Student of Distinction award,” Ecker said, adding that he had been very impressed watching Meza interact with a canine patient recently.

Meza takes part in PNW BOCES’ New Visions Veterinary Science program.

“Lou, everyone commends you and recommends you because you’ve shown true dedication, responsibility, and a genuine passion for the care and the welfare of animals as well as for the field of veterinary medicine,” Ecker said.

Meza was praised for his efforts both in class and at Muscoot Farm, an interpretive farm/museum in Somers, where PNW BOCES veterinary science students spend two days a week learning how to care for animals such as goats, sheep, chickens, and horses.

“I really like working outside,” he said. “I like to be on my feet rather than behind a desk, so I’ve really enjoyed working on the farm.”

“You show patience, attentiveness, and respect and you ensure that each animal you work with is handled safely and with the best care,” Ecker told him.

Meza was also nominated for his ability to work with all of his peers and teachers across all of PNW BOCES’ programs.

The teen, who was recently named to SHS’s “High Honor Roll,” plans to pursue a career as a veterinarian for large animals and will be attending SUNY Cobleskill next year.

Meza appreciated the award.

"It definitely felt like my effort these past two years in the program has paid off," he said.

(In March, Meza was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, which celebrates the accomplishments of students who excel in career and technical education.)

“We are so excited for you,” Eker told him, adding that PNW BOCES was confident that Meza will “continue to make contributions in this field.”

“We remain here for you and would love to stay in touch as you continue on this journey,” he said.
