Last night, my family and I did something we don’t always manage to pull off during December: we found a holiday experience that genuinely worked for everyone.
We attended Lumina at Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard in North Salem, and I want to be clear about something up front. Yes, Lumina is an advertiser. But the reason I’m writing about it is simple: it’s a spectacular experience, and one I would wholeheartedly recommend to our readers.
We went on Dec. 23, with the temperature hovering around 33 degrees. With winter coats, hats, and gloves, it was not only comfortable—it was thoroughly enjoyable. Lumina is a guided stroll along a set path, with immersive light displays and themed environments that feel thoughtfully designed by artists, not just assembled for the season.
There are familiar holiday moments, like a Nutcracker-inspired section set to Tchaikovsky, and more playful scenes, including a Candy Land-style stretch. Along the way, costumed characters—yes, even The Grinch and Frosty—made appearances that somehow impressed not just younger kids, but our 16-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son as well.
What really stood out was how they managed to make a cold winter night feel warm. From the very start, you can grab hot chocolate or hot cider (with spiked options for Mom and Dad). At the end of the walk, there’s a full bar, food options, and both indoor seating and massive outdoor fire pits surrounded by Adirondack chairs, where families lingered and relaxed instead of rushing out.
We had three generations on our stroll, and everyone found something to enjoy. That’s not easy to pull off—and Lumina does it exceptionally well.
It runs through Dec. 30, tickets must be purchased in advance, and if you’re looking for a memorable holiday evening that feels festive, creative, and genuinely family-friendly, this one is worth every penny.
