SOMERS, N.Y. - The Westchester County Health Department has determined that Lake Lincolndale Beach in Somers can reopen for swimming, provided there has been no Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) in the swimming area for at least one day and the bloom has not returned.
The water sample collected on Aug. 14 indicate that the bloom has subsided.
The bathing area of the beaches will continue to be monitored. Beach re-opening samples can only be collected after the bathing area is free of the harmful algae bloom for 24 hours.
According to Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler, beach closures are necessary to “ensure the safety and health of the public” when such blooms are present.
HAB’s get worse during heat waves because rising water temperatures lead to increased bacterial growth.
She encouraged residents and visitors to visit www.westchestergov.com for the latest updates on beach closures and reopenings.
