SOMERS, N.Y. - The holiday season is a special time in Somers!

Residents expressed their spirit and creativity with fantastic light displays, and folks gathered for a pair of festive events at The Elephant Hotel to celebrate harmony and community.

On Dec. 7, things kicked off with the annual Nativity Scene Dedication and blessing, sponsored by The Msgr. Raymond M. Collins Council 6205 of the Knights of Columbus. The afternoon included photos with Santa, hot cocoa, and a holiday sing-a-long on the front lawn, before Somers officials lit the town Christmas tree.

The following week, Chabad of Yorktown once again hosted the Chanukah Festival on Dec. 14, complete with face-painting, chocolate gelt and latkes. Before lighting the Menorah, councilman Anthony Cirieco offered remarks, standing in solidarity with the Jewish community.

"Tonight’s gathering has a deeper meaning in light of recent shameful violent events and intolerance across our nation and the world," Cirieco said. "Now, more than ever. It is important that we continue our celebration with our Jewish neighbors and friends, recognizing these traditions and their importance to our Somers community.

Our Jewish community has long contributed to the vibrancy and generosity that makes our town special. We are grateful for your traditions, your leadership, and the light you share with us all.

On behalf of our Town Board, myself, and the Cirieco family, we want to express to our Jewish community: we see you, we support you, and we celebrate with you."

Rabbi Yehuda Heber then led the community in the annual Menorah lighting ceremony, followed by a dazzling fire juggling performance.

Everyone at The Somers Record hopes that our readers have a safe and happy holiday season!
