SOMERS, N.Y. - Somers schools and community organizations such as the Boy and Girl Scouts once again have partnered to spread the spirit of gratitude and community.
Volunteers made up of students, staff, and families contributed an impressive collection of nonperishable items to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church’s food pantry so that folks in need can have a hot and complete meal this Thanksgiving.
The Rev. Mary McCarthy of St. Luke’s, overwhelmed by the town’s generosity, had this message to send out to volunteers.
“Everyone deserves to have enough to eat. thank you for helping make that possible,” she said.
The school district itself noted that the drive’s success was “made possible by the coordinated efforts of many dedicated individuals.”
Somers High School school social worker Kristen Rigaglia and the district’s director of facilities, Chris McCartney, played key roles in organizing the collection and delivery of donations, it said, also extending “heartfelt appreciation” to its custodial and maintenance team members “whose behind-the-scenes work ensured that donations were sorted, transported, and handled with care.”
“Their contributions were vital to the smooth and efficient operation of the drive,” the district said in a post on its website.
Meals on Main Street, a nonprofit group based in Port Chester, donated 50 whole chickens, plus canned veggies, broth, cooking oil, and packaged stuffing.
Scouts pitched in by packing up baskets. An estimated 80 families came by to pick up food.
Efforts to feed folks don’t begin and end with the holidays, especially in this era of rampant food insecurity, the Rev. McCarthy noted.
There is a collection bin for non-perishable items at the church, which is located at 331 Route 100, Somers, N.Y., and another at DeCicco & Sons grocery store at 266 Route 202, Somers, N.Y.
The pantry welcomes everyone and is open on Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
