Westchester urges residents to prepare for coastal storm

Heavy rain, strong winds and flooding possible Friday into Sunday

With a possible nor’easter expected to hit the tristate area this weekend, Westchester County officials are urging residents to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding.

The storm’s exact track and the extent of its impacts on Westchester remained uncertain Friday, but Sound Shore communities were expected to face an elevated risk of moderate coastal flooding.

The combination of heavy rain, strong winds, high tides and a full moon could increase the risk of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone coastal areas, county officials said. Other parts of Westchester could also see periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

“We are closely monitoring this storm and preparing for whatever impacts it may bring to Westchester,” County Executive Ken Jenkins said. “We are particularly concerned about our Sound Shore communities, where the combination of rain, wind and high tides could create flooding conditions.”

Jenkins urged residents to prepare ahead of the storm, use caution and avoid unnecessary travel when conditions deteriorate.

The Westchester County Department of Emergency Services is monitoring the storm and coordinating preparations with the county departments of Public Works and Transportation and Public Safety.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions before the storm and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather.

Motorists should not drive around barricades or attempt to drive through standing or moving water on roadways, county officials said.

Halston Media will be monitoring the impacts of the looming storm, along with possible closures and cancellations of events scheduled across our coverage area.
