Voters in Westchester County's 4th Legislative District decided who would represent them on the county Board of Legislators in the Tuesday, Nov. 3 election between Republican challenger John Campobasso and incumbent Democrat Vedat Gashi.

Gashi received 16,142 votes, or 60.70 percent, compared with 10,435 votes, or 39.24 percent, for Campobasso, according to unofficial election results as of 8:40 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6. There were 17 write-in votes, or 0.06 percent.

All 61 election districts in the race had only partially reported results. A significant number of emergency paper ballots cast on Election Day remained uncounted, and the results were subject to change as additional ballots were tabulated. As of late Thursday and early Friday, the election reporting status page indicated that early voting results had been fully reported.

Yorktown News reached out to Gashi by text message at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, to ask whether he was declaring victory in his reelection bid or waiting until all ballots had been counted.

As of 8:40 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, he had not responded. This article will be updated if a response is received.

Born in Kosovo, then part of Yugoslavia, Gashi immigrated to the United States with his family as a young child to escape the communist regime. The family eventually settled in Yorktown, where he graduated from Lakeland High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Connecticut College, where he later served as a young alumni trustee, and a law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law.

Gashi interned with future Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, then a judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-Indiana, on the House International Relations Committee. He later worked in Kosovo as part of U.S. and European efforts to establish the newly independent state, helping draft foundational legal documents and establish the Ministry of Local Government Administration. He was later nominated by the United Nations to serve as chief legal adviser to Kosovo’s prime minister. Gashi operates a real estate law practice in Yorktown Heights and the Bronx.

He previously told Yorktown News that “affordability must remain our number one priority as we tackle the challenges ahead.”
