Despite a season hampered by canceled meets and illness, North Salem’s indoor track team turned in a strong showing at the rescheduled League Championships on Jan. 31 at Rockland Community College. Competing in just their second meet of the season and shorthanded by illness, the Tigers delivered several standout performances against much larger teams. Shailey Ray captured a league championship in the 600 meters, while Shannon Moravick placed second and Drew Karam third in the 1000 meters. Kinsey Levesque finished fifth in the shot put, the girls 4x200-meter relay earned silver, and the boys 4x400-meter relay placed fourth. North Salem’s girls finished fourth overall and the boys fifth in the six-team league.
The Tigers would send a pair of runners to the Class C championship meet at The Armory on Feb. 15, with Karam placing 6th in the 1600M with a personal record time of 4:44:81 and Jonathan Alves finishing 14th in the 600M with a personal best time of 1:39:25.
“It’s been a tough season of cancelled meets and not enough races, but these two really shined in the end,” said Coach Chris Gould.
Karam was set to compete at the state qualifier meet on Feb. 22.
It was a standout showing for North Salem at the Sectional Championships on Feb. 9 and 10, as both the girls and boys bowling teams delivered impressive performances.
The girls team placed fourth overall, topping league powerhouse Hendrick Hudson High School, which had been the No. 1 team in the league all season. Junior Erika Saez is headed back to the state championships after earning third place honors for both high game and series. She also secured a spot on the Small School Composite Team by finishing among the top three highest season averages in the section. Senior Regan Outhouse rolled a personal-best 141, while junior Emma Wallace posted a career-high 128, highlighting what Coach Teresa Tdzubak described as a true team effort marked by strong camaraderie and support.
The boys team followed with a runner-up finish at sectionals. Junior Jericho Hartley earned top honors for highest game and series of the day. Hartley, along with junior Ben Guiliano and senior Will Lehr, will advance to the state championships as members of the Small School Composite Team after recording the top three highest season averages in the section.
The Tigers are set to roll at states on Saturday, March 14, at AMF Lanes in Syracuse.
BYSNS 6, Horace Greeley/John Jay-CR 5
Saturday, Feb. 7
BYSNS (Brewster/Yorktown/Somers/North Salem) defeated Horace Greeley/John Jay-Cross River 6-5, on a goal with just 59 seconds remaining in overtime by Ryan Dean (1G, 1A).
“I got thrown to the ground and I drew a penalty,” Dean said. “Right off the face-off of the power play, I won it and (Zyggi) Nemzer passed it up to the point to (Jordan) Millar and he got a shot on net. Then came a rebound that popped out right to me and I had a wide-open net to score in overtime. It felt amazing to score that goal because our team played a great game and to finish it off with scoring an overtime goal felt amazing.”
Millar led the Bisons with an impressive 4 points (1G, 3A) and 7 blocked shots.
“He received the player of the game for us, as he even was a great voice in the locker room,” said BYSNS coach Ryan Langkafel. “James Munoz had 2 goals and displayed impressive leadership too. We also had fantastic coaching, game plan preparation and execution by (assistant) coaches Paul Murphy and Aidan Martin.”
Nemzer scored twice and Patrick Vaughn recorded 23 saves, contributing to the Bisons’ victory as well.
BYSNS 9, Carmel 4
Friday, Feb. 13
BYSNS defeated Carmel 9-4 on its senior night and in the process clinched the Section 1 League B title, its first league title since the four schools combined to play together during the 2019-2020 season.
Ryan Dean (alternate captain), Ryan Sandhop, Greg Marotta, Paul Rienzi, Lucas Salvatore (captain), James Munoz (captain), Patrick Vaughn, Brady Janec, and Jordan Millar (captain) were the seniors honored before the game, one that started with BYSNS leading 4-0 at the end of the opening period.
“It means everything to me and our team to clinch the league title as it is the first one in program history,” Dean said. “Our team has had a great season and I think winning the league title just makes it even better.”
Salvatore (4G, 2A), Henry Rossi (2G, 1A), Rilind Berisha (3A), Munoz (1G, 1A), Dean (1G), Sandhop (1G), Keiran Ryan (1A), Millar (1A), and Vaughn (31 saves) did the job for the Bisons in their final regular season home game.
“It (winning the league) means so much to the players and the coaching staff,” said BYSNS coach Ryan Langkafel. “It was one of the goals we set out to achieve this year, and it’s a very rewarding goal. Obtaining the league championship rewards our hard work and success over the course of the season, playing great teams and competing every game.
“I’m so proud of the players, especially the seniors and our captains who led the way. They are a very experienced and talented group who took pride in playing our style of hockey. They were all so committed and sacrificed so much I couldn’t be happier for them to have made history with this team.”

Monday, Feb. 16
BYSNS (Brewster/Yorktown/Somers/North Salem) nipped host Pawling 3-2 in its regular-season finale, led by Lucas Salvatore (1G, 2A), Jordan Millar (1G, 1A), James Munoz (1G), Ryan Dean (1A) and Patrick Vaughn (40 saves), finishing the regular season at 14-3.
“The key to this game was to stick to the game plan,” Dean said. “We went up 3-0 in the first but then Pawling came back and made the game 3-2. But we stuck to the game plan and we stuck out with the win.”
BYSNS earned the No. 3 seed in the Section 1 Division 1 Tournament and the bye that came with it. The Bisons, weather permitting, were scheduled to host No. 6 Scarsdale at the Brewster Ice Arena on Feb. 23 in a quarterfinal contest.
