NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - As the calendar flipped to September, the Tigers didn't waste any time showing their teeth. All of our teams picked up big opening week wins, including dominant defensive performances from North Salem field hockey, a statement victory from the volleyball squad, and both Tiger soccer teams putting the competition on notice.
BOYS SOCCER
Carmel 3, North Salem 2
Thursday, Sept. 3
North Salem began their quest for a third straight state title by going on the road for a physical battle with the Rams. Carmel found the back of the net first, but the Tigers refused to back down with relentless pressure that included breakaway chances for Liam Keegan and Juben Lazri. Senior Isaac Rouse would score the equalizer with 4:25 remaining in the first half. A blast from Lazri would give the Tigers the lead early in the second frame, but the Rams bounced back to tie and netted the deciding goal with 4:11 remaining.
North Salem 2, Rye Neck 1
Saturday, Sept. 5
The Tigers found their way into the win column at home. Captain Jason Gjushi got North Salem on the board first off an assist from Rouse. Rye Neck would respond to send the contest into the half tied 1-1. Late in the second frame, sophomore Adrian Ortiz scored the game-winner off a feed from Keegan. Sophomore Joseph Vorfi and 8th grader Mateo Maya split keeper duties with 3 saves apiece.
North Salem 2, Arlington B 1
Tuesday, Sept. 8
The Tigers kept the momentum going on the road with a two-goal game from Keegan off assists from Mason Bertolini and Jhon Rodriguez.
GIRLS SOCCER
North Salem 3, New Rochelle 3
Saturday, Sept. 5
The squad began the season on the road with a first half hat trick from junior Sienna Paldin, but had to settle for a draw with the Huguenots. Jennifer Killeen, Maddy Horel, and Alana Cerasoli had assists and Grace Schaeffer had 15 saves in goal.
North Salem 1, Blind Brook 0
Wednesday, Sept. 9
After a scoreless first half, junior Jackie Moore got North Salem on the board early in the second frame. The Tiger defense dug deep to fend off the Trojans in the waning minutes, including a clutch save from Schaeffer on a shot from point blank range to seal the win in the home opener.
FIELD HOCKEY
North Salem 6, Valhalla 0
Friday, Sept. 4
The Tigers opened the season by blanking Valhalla on the road. Senior Leah Malvino led the way with a pair of goals alongside Kylie Robinson (1 goal) and Kathryn Dupree (1 assist). Sophie Braz (1 goal, 1 assist), Maddy Bridges (1 goal), Maya Melendez (1 goal) and Sadie Karam (1 assist) all tallied their first varsity points. Junior Queena Li had 1 save in goal.
North Salem 4, Ossining 0
Wednesday, Sept. 9
The squad took down the Lions on the road for their second straight shutout with Malvino (2 goals, 1 assist), Noelle Dupree (1 goal), Robin Pockriss (1 goal), and Katherine Dupree (1 assist) powering the offense.
"Noelle created many runs for us down the field again, and Robin and Kylie had excellent defensive games," said Coach Jen Frohman.
North Salem 3, Harrison 1
Thursday, Sept. 10
The Tigers went to war with Harrison at home, coming away with their third straight win behind a gutsy performance from Bridges who notched a goal and an assist while requiring stitches to her eye. Sadie Karam and Ella Santis had their first varsity goals and Malvino chipped in an assist. Li had a pair of saves in goal.
VOLLEYBALL
North Salem 3, Pleasantville 0
Wednesday, Sept. 2
The Tigers kicked off their campaign to defend the section title with a statement win at home, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15. Mikaela Monnelly (20 assists, 10 aces, 6 digs) and Ally Maza (11 kills, 14 digs, 2 assists, 1 ace) led the charge, with Camila Lesmes (4 kills, 3 aces, 7 digs), Matilda Kornbluth (3 kills, 6 aces, 2 blocks), and Grace Barbarossa (4 kills) all chipping in to help the squad open the season on a high note.
Blind Brook 3, North Salem 1
Wednesday, Sept. 9
The squad got nipped by the Trojans on the road, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19. Maza (18 kills, 10 digs, 2 aces), Sadie Matt (22 assists, 6 digs, 2 aces, 1 block), Bella Jones (7 kills, 2 digs) and Sophia Miller (9 digs) all played strong in the effort.
Putnam Valley 3, North Salem 0
Thursday, Sept. 10
The Tigers were blanked at home, 25-20, 25-20, 25-15. Matt had 23 assists, 7 digs, and 2 aces, while Maza notched 19 kills and 9 digs.
"It was a couple tough games back to back, but the girls put up a good fight," said Coach Toni Fiore.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Tigers are scheduled to start their season against Mahopac on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
