Golf claims league title, Cindrich scores 200th goal

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The playoffs are a special time in Tiger town, with several North Salem squads fighting to keep their dreams of postseason glory alive.

GIRLS LACROSSE

North Salem 14, Harrison 11

Thursday, May 14

The squad came out on top of a slugfest with the Huskies. Ashley Cindrich and Abby Cassidy each recorded a hat trick, with Emma Greenberg, Noemi Torres, and Sienna Paldin each netting a pair. Sydney Merriman (1 goal, 1 assist), Kylie Robinson (1 goal), Kerri Nemeth (1 assist), Jackie Moore (3 ground balls) and Alana Cerasoli (3 ground balls, 2 draw controls) all got in on the action to help put North Salem over the top. Kylie Dell (5 saves) and Emma Hickey (3 saves) split keeper duties.

Briarcliff 13, North Salem 5

Saturday, May 16

The Tigers finished the regular season with a tough road loss. Cassidy led the scoring with a pair, while Merriman, Cindrich, and Noemi Torres each netted one in the effort.

North Salem 14, Westlake 3

Saturday, May 23

North Salem stormed into the postseason with a big win over the Wildcats at home. Cindrich (4 goals, 1 assist) and Torres (3 goals) led the charge, with Cassidy and Merriman netting two goals each. Dell and Hickey were solid in goal with 4 saves each.

North Salem 17, Haldane 9

Wednesday, May 27

The Tigers handled Haldane in the quarterfinals on the strength of a 5-goal performance from Torres, with Cindrich finding the back of the net 4 times, including her 200th career goal. North Salem trailed late in the second quarter before the defense clamped down and held the Blue Devils scoreless for 25 minutes. Cassidy (3 goals, 3 assists), Robinson (2 goals), Merriman (2 goals), and Nemeth (1 goal, I assist) all had strong showings.

Playoff Picture

North Salem is scheduled to square off with Pleasantville in the Class D semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Pleasantville High School.

GOLF

Arlington 209, North Salem 222

Monday, May 11

The squad took a loss at Centennial Golf Club, with James Nemeth (39), Lucas Salvatore (43) and Lucas Virzi (43) having solid days on the course.

North Salem 221, Mahopac 237

Wednesday, May 13

The Tigers captured their second straight league championship and improved to 9-3 on the season, with Nemeth leading the charge by carding a 39.

North Salem 217, Pawling 232

Thursday, May 14

The team capped off a marathon week with a win over their rival Tigers at Centennial.

Postseason

With the regular season complete, junior standout James Nemeth  advanced to sectionals on May 18 at Tamarack Country Club. Round one saw him shot a 3-over 73, earning a second place tie in Section 1. Round 2 would prove more challenging, with Nemeth carding an 84 and entering a three-way tie for the final spot on the Section 1 team. After all three golfers parred the first sudden-death round, Nemeth sank a 50-foot eagle putt to earn a spot in the New York State tournament in Rochester beginning on June 5.

SOFTBALL

North Salem 17, Valhalla 5

Monday, May 18

The Tigers pounded the Vikings at home in their regular season finale. Erika Saez picked up her first varsity win on the mound while Cora Kennedy (3-4, triple), Marissa Ferrara (3 RBI) and Riley Sullivan (HR) powered the offense.

North Salem 16, Leffell 10

Thursday, May 28

Kennedy led the squad with in the semifinals, going 4-5 with a pair of doubles, a home run, and 3 RBI. North Salem's offense exploded with standout efforts from Sophia Aqeel (5 RBI), Brianna Rodriguez (2 RBI), and Bella Soria (2 RBI). Sullivan picked up the win.

Playoff Picture

The Tigers are set to face Tuckahoe for the section title at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, at North Rockland High School.

BASEBALL

The Tigers came up short in a best-of-three semifinal series against Leffell, losing 6-5 on May 18 and 16-1 on May 21.

Afterward, Coach Rob Gilchrist took time to reflect on the team's performance.

“The season went well overall,” said Gilchrist. “Of course we wish we could have had a better record, but we had our share of injuries throughout the season. More importantly, our entire roster gained a ton of playing experience and we look to build off of that next year.”

With the season complete, the squad will lose seniors Alex Hoffman and Ryan Denneen to graduation.

BOYS LACROSSE

Haldane 16, North Salem 4

Monday, May 11

The squad was upended by the Blue Devils on the road. Drew Karam had a hat trick and Nico Rouse added a goal in the effort.

Newburgh 11, North Salem 6

Friday, May 15

The Tigers closed out their season with a slugfest against Newburgh Free Academy. Rouse netted 3 goals, with Karam, Andrew DeLarco, and Brady Armstrong also scoring.

“This season was definitely one of the most challenging of my coaching career, but I’m incredibly proud of our players for never quitting,” said Coach Vin Savastano. “We were extremely young, battled low numbers, and faced adversity all season long, yet the kids continued to compete, improve, and support one another. Our record may not show it, but the toughness, growth, and culture these players helped build will benefit the North Salem lacrosse program for years to come.

The Tigers will bid farewell to seniors Max Cotrone, Dean Ellicott, and Orlando Mulaj.
