Pegasus Therapeutic Riding receives $100k state grant

BREWSTER, N.Y. - Pegasus Therapeutic Riding’s campus in Brewster has gotten a financial boost from the state.

An organization that offers equine-assisted activities and education to individuals with disabilities and challenges, Pegasus received a $100,000 grant that it used to complete several key infrastructure projects, according to Executive Director Candice Sciarillo.

The grant was secured by state Sen. Pete Harckham (D-South Salem) through the state’s Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) program.

According to Harckham, the program helps communities and nonprofit organizations “strengthen resilience, improve operational efficiency, and better serve residents.”

“The impact of equine therapy is well-documented in treating people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and who are on the autism spectrum,” he said.

“Pegasus is a national leader in this movement, and I am proud to have been able to partner with them on this funding,” Harckham added.

Pegasus used the money to replace windows and the roof on its administration building, upgrade the facility’s heating and cooling system, build a retaining wall, and pave part of a driveway.

The improvements will help the organization expand programs and “better serve individuals and families throughout our community,” Sciarillo said.

Pegasus Therapeutic Riding is located at 310 Peach Lake Road in Brewster, N.Y.

Inaugurated by a group of women equestrians in 1974, it today operates three chapters across Putnam and Fairfield counties.

It moved into its present 20-acre farm facility in 2007 and today serves about 300 people annually with the help from over 100 volunteers plus 10 horses, many of which are now enjoying a second “career” in equine therapy.
