NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - After roaring down the stretch and topping Leffell in the semifinals, the Tigers found themselves in familiar territory.
The squad once again faced off with rival Tuckahoe in a rematch of last year’s section title game.
Unfortunately, a championship wasn’t in the cards for North Salem.
After several team members opted not to finish out the season, the Tigers took the field with only 8 players at North Rockland High School on Sunday, May 31.
With freshman Riley Sullivan on the mound, the Tiger defense was solid in the early going, holding the potent Tuckahoe offense to a single run over the first two innings.
At the plate, North Salem didn’t have an answer for Katie Attwood, as the Tuckahoe pitcher retired 13 Tigers over 6 innings.
The turning point came in the bottom of the third when Tuckahoe erupted for 5 runs, including a 3-run blast from Attwood, en route to a 12-0 victory.
“Tuckahoe is on a mission to win a state title after losing in the finals last year, so we knew it was going to be a battle,” said Coach Tim Collins. “But we fought hard and made some insane plays out there.”
Despite coming up short in their section title bid, the Tigers put together a memorable season with several seniors finishing their North Salem careers with stellar numbers. Marissa Ferrara notched 100 career hits, Sophia Aqeel finished her career with 185 hits, 176 RBI, and 27 HR, and Cora Kennedy ended her time in a Tiger uniform with 138 Hits, 76 RBI, and 13 HR.
With the season now complete, the squad will also bid farewell to senior Brianna Rodriguez.
