NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Building on the momentum from a strong showing at the Westchester County Championships, North Salem’s cross country team brought their A-game to sectionals on Nov. 9.
Taking on stiff competition at Bowdoin Park, the Tigers showed out yet again, with the boys team finishing 3rd and the girls team taking 4th place.
However, the story of the day was a quartet of North Salem runners qualifying for states with phenomenal performances in the Class D 5k.
Junior Marissa Ferrara (3rd) and sophomore Freyja Smith (5th) qualified from the girls team, while freshman Drew Karam (5th) and senior Jack Fryer (7th) punched their tickets on the boys side. Sophomore Skyler Smith narrowly missed a trip to states by only two runners.
“We had a girls team for the first time in several years and they competed well,” explained Coach Chris Gould. “The team scores were pretty tight with Tuckahoe taking the win. Marissa and Freyja had breakout races with huge PR’s. When you put the work in and then see these results, it is very satisfying.”
The Tigers will compete at the state championships in Queensbury on Saturday, Nov. 16.
