NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - North Salem’s 2024 boys soccer team can forever call themselves state champions.
The Tigers would write themselves into the record books with a thrilling 2-1 win over the Allegany-Limestone Gators in the Class C state title game on Nov. 16 at Middletown High School.
North Salem would strike first, with junior Sean Randall capitalizing on a penalty kick at 17:21 after being fouled by the Gators’ goalkeeper.
Carrying the 1-0 lead into the half, excitement began to grow among the throng of North Salem fans in attendance.
Allegany-Limestone refused to go quietly, with Zander Parsons netting the equalizer off a corner at 36:25 in the second frame.
With tension and anticipation building, the Tigers would not be denied.
At 15:23, senior Jack Newman would provide the heroics, scoring the go-ahead goal off an assist from sophomore Liam Keegan.
The squad’s defense would clamp down, and when time expired it was time to start the celebration. A crowd of North Salem students, some outfitted in Tiger costumes, flooded the field to join the party.
The win brought North Salem’s final season record to 17-2-3, and marked the third state championship win for longtime Coach Ron Hendrie.
