North Salem Republican Town Committee continues 'Constitution Week' tradition

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - For the sixth consecutive year, the North Salem Republican Town Committee (NSRTC) has provided pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution to the North Salem High School senior class in recognition of Constitution Week and in support of the school’s civics education program.

On Friday, Sept. 11, NSRTC Vice Chair Howard Hellwinkel delivered 100 special-edition pocket Constitutions to North Salem High School Principal Dr. Martin for distribution to the school’s seniors.

This year’s commemorative edition is particularly fitting as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary. The dual-sided publication features the U.S. Constitution on one side and the Declaration of Independence on the other, giving students two of the nation’s foundational documents in a single keepsake edition.

The delivery came just ahead of Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23. Sept. 17 is Constitution Day, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787.

The 100 copies provided to North Salem seniors were made possible through an NSRTC fundraiser, in which Ms. Thomson placed a successful bid in the committee’s silent auction.

The initiative is also part of the NSRTC’s “America 250 Year of Service,” a yearlong commitment to community service and civic participation. In recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the committee is making an additional 250 pocket editions available free to the North Salem community, with a limit of one per person. Residents may request a copy by emailing northsalemrepublicans@gmail.com.

During the delivery, Hellwinkel was also photographed beside the NSRTC’s legacy brick at the high school. The committee purchased the brick last year through the North Salem Athletic Booster Club’s Legacy Brick program in support of North Salem students and student-athletes.

Hellwinkel is pictured holding the special America 250 dual-sided edition of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

The brick carries the committee’s message to North Salem students: “The North Salem Republican Town Committee says Go Tigers! Work Hard, Lead On & Off Field, Character = Victory!”

For the NSRTC, the annual Constitution Week tradition is intended to support civic education and encourage young people to understand the foundations of American government. Providing seniors with copies of the founding documents gives them something tangible to read, reference and keep after graduation.

“Six years ago, we began this tradition because we believe civic education matters,” said NSRTC Chairwoman Nzingha Milanes. “We are pleased to once again support North Salem High School’s civics program and place these founding documents directly into the hands of our graduating seniors. As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, this is an especially meaningful time for young Americans to read and understand the documents that helped shape our country.”

The committee’s message for Constitution Week is: “Read it. Know it. Pass it on.”
