NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Drizzle and overcast skies couldn’t dampen the spirits of those gathered outside St. James Episcopal Church on Sunday, March 16, as the community came together for a rally and march in support of Ukraine.
Before the crowd of more than 100 supporters took to the street, Reverend Judy Ferguson offered a prayer for peace and a call to action.
“The Ukrainians need our help,” Ferguson said. "They’re being wounded and killed. Their freedom is in jeopardy. The oppressor is at the door. We need to be there to help them. It is a command of God to make sure that people have justice and that they live in a peaceful country. And it's for us to make things better. And that’s what we’re doing here today. Thank you for being loving, peaceful people.”
The group made their way down Route 116, singing, holding signs, and waving flags, both American and Ukrainian. When the procession arrived at the intersection with Route 121, they lined the road while passing motorists sounded their horns in show of solidarity.
