NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - A North Salem man has been charged with trying to purchase a gun without disclosing that he was a convicted felon, state police said.
Elliot Kraus, 48, was arrested in the town of Southeast in Putnam County around 10:32 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and charged with one count of first-degree falsifying business records, a Class E felony; and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class D felony, police said.
If found guilty of the more serious charge, he could spend some time in state prison.
The charges are related to a legal document filed at a gun shop in the Putnam County town of Kent, police said.
Kraus was arraigned and freed without bail. He is to appear in Kent Town Court on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
State police did not disclose the type of felony of which Kraus was originally convicted.
