North Salem lacrosse pounds Ardsley in season opener

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - After a rash of postponements due to opponent illness and inclement weather, North Salem’s boys lacrosse team has been anxious to start the season.

And when they finally kicked things off against Ardsley on April 5, the Tigers were hungry.

Finally able to feast, North Salem pummeled the Panthers for a huge 14-1 win.

The first quarter saw chances for both squads and nearly ended scoreless before senior Justin Major found the back of the net in the final seconds to put the Tigers up 1-0.

When the second began, junior Max Cotrone got the party started, netting five straight goals to get the team rolling to a 6-1 lead at the half.

While Cotrone dominated the second quarter, the next frame would belong to one of the squad's newcomers.

In the third quarter, freshman Drew Karam netted his first varsity goal. Not satisfied with only one and perhaps drawing some inspiration from his captain, the middie would add a pair for his first hat trick.

Senior attacker Dillon Coughlan got in on the action with the next score as the Tigers repeatedly broke through the Ardsley defenders.

Cotrone and Karam both scored again, and Major added another pair along with four assists to complete the opening-day statement win. John Gogo, George Naber, and Nico Rouse also all notched assists for the Tigers.

On the opposite end, North Salem’s defenders put on a clinic, with Gogo, Malachi Andrews, Nick Naber, Jack Fryer, and Ryan Vorfi stifling the visitors at every turn. Mike Bonelli had 10 saves in goal.

The victory also marked the first win for new coach Vin Savastano at the helm of the Tigers.

“I was so impressed with how these kids competed,” said Savatano. “The way they attacked the ground ball and hustled all over the field was such a great thing to watch. I couldn’t be happier with how much they have picked up our system and executed the game plan to perfection.”

With the first North Salem win under his belt, Savastano lauded his team and looked to the possibilities of what could be.

“These kids played their hearts out, and hopefully this is one win of many to come,” he added. “We told them they are paving the way for all the future success that will come for North Salem lacrosse. Everybody is excited about the new era which has just begun.”

The Tigers will be back in action on the road against Sleepy Hollow on Monday, April 7, at 5 p.m.
