North Salem GOP gives out pocket Constitutions

Posted

Dear Editor,

Constitution Week, observed Sept. 17-23, is an opportunity to remember that the freedoms we enjoy as Americans depend upon citizens understanding the document that protects them.

For the sixth consecutive year, the North Salem Republican Town Committee is continuing a tradition that we are especially proud of: providing pocket Constitutions to senior class students at North Salem High School. This year, as our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we will provide 100 special-edition Constitutions to our graduating seniors.

This year’s gift was made possible through a silent auction held specifically to support our Constitution Week initiative. We extend a special thank you to Ms. Thomson, the winning bidder, whose generous contribution will help put these Constitutions directly into the hands of our students.

But in America’s 250th year, we wanted to do more than continue our school tradition. As part of our America 250 Year of Service, we are also making 250 pocket Constitutions available free to members of the public.

Anyone who would like a copy may contact us at northsalemrepublicans@gmail.com. Constitutions are limited to one per person.

The Constitution is not simply a document to be studied in a history class. Its words continue to define the structure of our government, protect our liberties, and establish both the powers and limitations of those we elect to represent us. Whatever our political differences may be, understanding those principles is an important part of responsible citizenship.

There may be no more appropriate way to commemorate America’s 250th birthday than to encourage our neighbors, and especially our young people, to read the document that has helped sustain our republic for nearly 2-1/2 centuries.

Read it. Know it. Pass it on.
