North Salem Field Hockey Preview: Tigers ready to face challenging schedule

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - North Salem field hockey enters the new season with a strong mix of returning talent and promising newcomers, and while the Tigers know they’ll face a grueling schedule, they are embracing the challenge.

The returning core includes senior Abby Cassidy, along with juniors Kylie Robinson, Leah Malvino, and Robin Pockriss. Sophomores Noelle and Kathryn Dupree also return and are expected to play larger roles this fall.

“All of these girls will play a key role and a bigger role for our team this year,” said Coach Jen Frohman, who has watched this group learn from past leaders and step into leadership themselves.

North Salem also welcomes two dynamic freshmen in Maya Melendez and Maddy Bridges, who are already impressing with their speed and skill.

After learning from a talented senior class two years ago and standout Sophia Aversano last season, Frohman said her players understand what it takes to lead and to compete until the final whistle. They’ll need that toughness, as the schedule ahead is one of the program’s most difficult yet.

This year, Section 1 has created a cross-conference schedule that pits North Salem against some of the top programs in the region. The Tigers will face four of last year’s top Class B teams — Lakeland, John Jay, Greeley, and Yorktown — along with Class A powers Roy C. Ketcham and Ursuline.

Fortunately for North Salem, those teams won’t be sectional opponents, as the Tigers remain in Class C. Still, their class offers no shortage of competition, with perennial contenders like Bronxville, Pleasantville, and Putnam Valley also on the schedule.

Frohman said her team’s preparation and off-season work will help them rise to the occasion.

“Many of these girls have been working in the off-season developing their skills and talents,” she said. “They are excited for the season and so am I. I can’t wait to see what they can do.”
