North Salem Cross Country Preview: Tigers look for a fast start behind experienced core

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The North Salem cross country team is eager to hit the ground running this fall after what Coach Chris Gould described as a “spirited first week of preseason” filled with strong workouts and promising performances.

With a mix of veteran leaders and new faces, the squad has their eyes set on building momentum through the regular season and peaking in November. Last season, North Salem sent four runners to the state championship meet, with three of those Tigers returning to the roster this fall.

On the boys’ side, North Salem will lean on captains Drew Karam and Jonathan Alves, as well as fellow returner Skyler Smith. Rounding out the experienced core are Dean Ellicott, Jack Proctor, and Jack Roach, giving the Tigers a reliable base. A talented group of newcomers including Andrew Barnett, Aaron Brown, Michael DiMase, Everdett Fryer, Andrew Petronzi, and Nicholas Petronzi have already impressed in their varsity debuts and will provide crucial depth as the season progresses.

The girls’ squad is led by captain Marissa Ferrara, joined by standouts Shannon Moravick and Freyja Smith, who all looked sharp throughout the opening week. With steady progress and continued development, the Tigers’ girls are aiming to push their limits as both individuals and a team.

Assistant Coach Bill Posch once again joins Gould in guiding the Tigers this fall, and the staff is optimistic about what this group can accomplish.

“We’re excited to see the heights everyone can reach as a team and individually,” Gould said.

North Salem’s season kicks off with a pre-League mega-dual meet on Sept. 9 at home, followed by a trip to the Somers Big Red Invitational on Sept. 13.

With early signs of energy and commitment, the Tigers are eager to prove themselves as contenders in Section 1.
