NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - After trouncing Tuckahoe in the semifinals, the top-ranked Tigers took the next step in their playoff campaign.
Standing in their way at Lakeland High School on Nov. 2 were #3 seed Haldane, with the section championship hanging in the balance.
The Blue Devils refused to back down, keeping goalkeeper Anthony Federice and the Tiger defense busy throughout the first frame. A goal from Gelio Duarte put Haldane on top and sent the Tigers into the half trailing 1-0.
At the onset of the second half, North Salem reminded their opponents why they are the defending state champions.
Junior Liam Keegan scored the equalizer on a penalty kick, followed by a goal from senior Aidan Santis.
With the lead secured, the Tigers found their groove and controlled the pace for the remainder of the game. Junior Juben Lazri would find the back of the net twice in the waning minutes as the clock ticked down and North Salem claimed their third straight section championship.
Senior Sean Randall and junior Nico Maya had assists, and Federice finished the night with 13 saves in goal.
The Tigers will now face Port Jefferson in the regional semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. at Hendrick Hudson High School.
