NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The temperature outside might be dropping, but things are heating up in Tiger town. The winter season got off to a fast start with boys basketball notching a tournament win and the girls team picking up their first win under the team’s new coach.
Boys Basketball
North Salem 63, Dover 43
Friday, Dec. 6
The Tigers opened the season with a big win in the opening round of the Pawling Tournament. Junior Max Cotrone led the charge with 25 points, with sophomore Lucas Virzi (18 points) and senior Justin Major (10 points) helping to power the offense.
North Salem 62, Pawling 46
Saturday, Dec. 7
The following day, the squad emerged victorious in a Tiger tussle with host Pawling to seal the tournament win. Junior Jameson Juan scored 20 points with Cotrone chipping in 13.
Girls Basketball
A youthful team of Tigers takes the court this season under new coach Elvin Gutierrez.
“North Salem is a young team who lost their top three scorers last year,” explains Gutierrez.
Junior Noemi Torres will be switching from forward to point guard this season, with freshman Maddy Horel and 8th grader Kerri Nemeth both expected to drive the Tiger offense. Rounding out the roster will be seniors Ruby Molina and Lauren Ndreu, and sophomores Emma Greenburgh, Freyja Smith, and Kathy Vassak.

Tuesday, Dec. 3
The Tigers opened with a win on the road against Keio Academy, with Greenburgh and Horel scoring 12 apiece. Nemeth would add 9 in the victory.
Brewster 50, North Salem 33
Wednesday, Dec. 4
The squad fell to the Bears the following day behind solid efforts from Torres (12 points) and Nemeth (9 points).
Bronxville 43, North Salem 36
Monday, Dec. 9
The Tigers took a tough loss on the road to open the week. Nemeth led the scoring with 17 points, with Vassak chipping in 10.
