North Salem Athlete Spotlight: Sophia Aversano

Posted

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - As the lone senior on North Salem’s field hockey team, Sophia Aversano had a big responsibility this year.

The captain was not only tasked with leading a team of younger Tigers into battle, but also with setting the tone for the future of the program. North Salem News caught up with the four-year varsity player to learn more about her thoughts on her final season, plans for after graduation, and her advice for younger athletes looking to follow in her footsteps.

How would you describe your final season with North Salem field hockey?

Overall, this season was so successful regardless of games won or lost. I think everyone at first questioned how this season was going to play out with there only being one senior and a bunch of underclassmen, but there was so much growth from August to October. There were obviously many challenges that we had to overcome, but everyone was dedicated to bettering themselves and the rest of the team. This year was a crucial building year for the program, and I know it will benefit North Salem field hockey in the years to come.

As the captain of the team, how did you value your position as a leader?

Being a captain for this team was something I truly valued. I’ve thought about this year ever since my freshman year and I quickly became determined to be the best leader I could be. It was very important to figure out what kind of leader I wanted to be and what my goals were for this specific team. I aimed to create a positive environment and display effective work ethic and communication.

Is there anyone you would like to recognize for helping you find success on and off the field?

My parents have played a huge role in my success, whether it was allowing me to play on multiple club teams, dedicating time and money to drive me to tournaments and games, or just supporting me in general. My dad is my biggest supporter and has taught me the value of hard work. My mom specifically has helped me the most because if it weren’t for her I would’ve never played field hockey. She was the first person to teach me how to play and I credit a lot of my success to her. Also, my coach Mrs. Frohman has helped me develop since I started playing for North Salem. She’s taught me how to put my skills to use and has grown my love for the sport. Because of her I’ve gained so much confidence and have become so well-rounded on and off the field.

What’s next after graduation? Will you continue to play field hockey?

After graduation I plan on attending a 4-year college majoring in marketing where I will most likely play club field hockey. I used to be set on playing real college field hockey, but over time I learned that it wouldn’t be a great fit for me or what I wanted. I think club field hockey will allow me to focus on other things while still pursuing the sport, which I’m excited about.

Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

My zodiac sign is a Taurus.

What is your favorite place to eat locally?

I love Bobo’s in Somers. The menu has so much variety.

For a young athlete looking to follow in your footsteps, what advice would you give about playing sports in North Salem?

I would tell a young athlete at North Salem to be open minded and try new things! Even though North Salem is a very small school, a rare benefit is that you can basically walk on to any team and be able to play. So don’t be afraid to put yourself in new environments with new people. It’s important to be comfortable with uncomfortable things so you can grow!
