NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - North Salem has adopted a 2026 town budget of $13,522,898, which represents a 7.95 percent increase over the current $12,527,025 spending plan.
In November, the Town Board voted unanimously to approve a local law allowing an override of the state’s tax cap if necessary.
On Dec. 9, it held a public hearing on the spending plan. That was continued on Dec. 16, at which point the board acted on the final version.
Several reasons were cited for the override, including the pending town-wide revaluation, increased medical insurance costs, and the debt service for the Delancey Hall restoration project.
The allowable tax cap is 2.33 percent. The 2026 budget will exceed that by 1.65 percent, or $124,471.64, according to town Supervisor Warren Lucas.
The tax levy is increasing by 3.984 percent (factoring in special district budgets) while the tax rate for the general and highway budgets is going up up by 4.52 percent per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
The average property owner can expect to see an increase of $148.82 in their tax bill next year, he said.
