BREWSTER, N.Y. - A Southeast family and their pets are safe, but their home was destroyed in a devastating fire on Christmas Eve.
Brewster firefighters dispatched to 414 North Salem Road around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, found the two-story, wood-frame dwelling heavily engulfed in flames.
The family of four was able to escape by themselves. One person suffered minor burns and was taken to a local hospital. Two cats were rescued, one of which had to be given oxygen. No firefighters were injured.
Assisting were the Croton Falls, Golden's Bridge, Carmel, Lake Carmel, and Danbury fire departments. There were about 40 firefighters at the scene along with Brewster EMS, Putnam Paramedics, Putnam Sheriff’s Office, state police, North Salem police, and NYSE&G.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack but were unable to reach the second floor of the dwelling because a stairwell had already burned.
There were no fire hydrants in the area and water had to be trucked in.
“Our hearts go out to the family affected by this tragedy on what was supposed to be a joyous evening,” Brewster fire officials said.
A GoFundMe with a goal of $30,000 has been organized to help the fire victims.
It was organized by Marilyn Busolt, who posted:
“My heart is heavy this Christmas.
A dear friend and amazing colleague has faced an unimaginable tragedy -- on Christmas Eve, Eva's house burned down. Thankfully, her two children, husband, mother, and animals are safe, but they've lost their home and nearly everything in it.
This family is kind, hardworking, and always there for others. Now they need our help. If you're able, please consider donating to help them rebuild their life. Any amount, big or small, will make a difference.
Even if you can't donate, sharing this post would mean the world. Let's come together as a community to show them love and support during this incredibly difficult time.
Thank you, and please keep this family in your thoughts.”
