NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Human Rights and Holocaust Commission hosted its annual “Unsung Heroes of Human Rights” celebration last month at the Hammond Museum, held in honor of the International Day of Tolerance. The evening was uplifting and inspiring, shining a spotlight on local individuals whose quiet but powerful work strengthens human rights in our communities.

HVHRHC President Steven Waldinger opened the program with a moving introduction and speech, setting the tone for a night filled with recognition, reflection, and artistry. This year’s honorees received awards from the Commission as well as citations from County Legislator Erika Pierce.

North Salem High School's Emma Wallace received the HVHRHC student award for her compelling essay, “Corporal Jason Dunham: A Marine’s Sacrifice for Human Rights,” which she read to the audience.

Also honored were Talia Pierson, Yorktown High School senior and founder of Lights of Tomorrow, a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to community empowerment, and Rabbi Jon Haddon, Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Shir Shalom, whose contributions were celebrated with heartfelt applause — and a song.

The evening also showcased performances by Francesca Prudente of the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance and harpist Janette Devine.
