“You just get the vibes of your surroundings and it rubs off on you.”
-Gordon Lightfoot
Master singer-songwriter (and proud Canadian!) Mr. Lightfoot nailed it. After profiling over 50 establishments, I’ve realized that what truly sets a place apart is its vibe.
But what exactly is a vibe? Merriam-Webster (remember those?) defines it as “a distinctive feeling or quality capable of being sensed.” Scientifically, our brains pick up on subconscious cues—energy, emotions, body language—which help us “feel” a space. While many places have good vibes, the great ones usually stem from staff who genuinely love what they do. Smiles, warmth, humor, and passion create a contagious energy that turns a visit into an experience.
And let’s face it: vibes are contagious.
Field Trip: Broken Symmetry Gastro Brewery, Bethel, Conn.
One recent afternoon, we ventured to Bethel, Conn., — a charming, walkable downtown with restaurants, shops and that quintessential New England flair. It’s also home to Broken Symmetry Gastro Brewery, where the Vibe-O-Meter shot off the charts.
The Story
Founder and Head Brewer Christopher Sanzeni shared that when they were seeking a location in 2018, Bethel’s historic train station became available. The town welcomed them with open arms and now takes great pride in having such a cool brewery in its backyard.
Chris, a physics major and former aerospace engineer working in defense systems, fell in love with brewing in the late ’90s. Homebrewing deepened his appreciation:
“The balance of science and creativity was intoxicating (pun intended)," Sanzeni said. "It was time to take the leap and turn my passion into a profession.”
The name Broken Symmetry was inspired by the physics concept of “symmetry breaking,” where small changes at a critical point determine the fate of a system—just like how yeast transforms beer.
The Vibe
“Whether it’s families with young children, longtime locals, or craft beer enthusiasts discovering us for the first time, there’s a place for everyone here," Sanzeni said. "It’s all about creating a warm, inviting atmosphere where great beer and great company come together.”
From the moment we walked in, the team’s enthusiasm was palpable. Sanzeni and their crew radiate passion. You’re not just a customer—you’re part of the family.
The Beer
Sanzeni's love of brewing was sparked by Chimay Grand Reserve, the legendary Belgian Trappist ale:
“I had no idea beer could be so rich and complex... and create an experience.”
He continues that tradition:
“I've always believed in offering a diverse range of styles on draft—something for the seasoned connoisseurs and a way to provide a fun, educational experience for guests who might not be familiar with certain styles.”
Also worth noting: Sanzeni has a killer sense of humor. Brewing tank names include Aretha Tanklin, Tankerbell, Tank Sinatra, Tanklin D. Roosevelt, and Tank Aaron.
