Dear Editor,
Through her leadership on the North Salem Climate Smart Community Leadership Committee (CSLC), Katherine Daniels delivers win-win outcomes for North Salem residents: saving taxpayers’ money while reducing our town’s carbon footprint.
Most notably, through Katherine’s guidance, North Salem secured more than $450,000 in grants to pay 100% of the recent North Salem Highway garage solar installation. The solar panels produce enough electricity to satisfy the Highway Department needs, plus provide a $15,000 credit to the town’s total electric bill. Katherine and the CSLC has also been an integral part of other North Salem initiatives to reduce energy costs, including the installation of energy efficient heat pumps in town buildings, the conversion of streetlights to LED bulbs and the installation of EV chargers on town property, among other initiatives. In 2022, North Salem became one of only 105 towns to achieve Bronze Certification status.
Republican critics of renewable energy argue that efforts to move away from fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions are an unnecessary waste of taxpayer money. The facts prove otherwise.
Katherine Daniels’ pragmatic, collaborative and fact-based approach to solving problems is what North Salem needs as we confront new and increasingly challenging issues.
