After the debates, we’re standing with Lucas

Dear Editor,

With Election Day approaching, have you been watching the debates and candidate forums? Over the past two weeks, voters in North Salem have had several opportunities to hear directly from candidates seeking public office at the federal, state and local levels. The question is: Are we taking advantage of them?

On Oct. 8, NY1/Spectrum News broadcast a debate between Republican candidate for New York State Attorney General Saritha Komatireddy and incumbent Attorney General Letitia James. The hour-long exchange gave voters an opportunity to compare the candidates’ positions, examine their records and hear how each responded to questions about the responsibilities of the Attorney General’s Office. Komatireddy challenged James on public safety, accountability and the priorities of the office.

On Oct. 13, the North Salem Seniors Candidate Forum brought together candidates from several races, including Congressman Mike Lawler and Cait Conley; Sergio Esposito and State Senator Pete Harckham; County Legislator Erika Pierce and Jozef Vala; Assemblyman Chris Burdick; and Town Supervisor Warren Lucas and Katherine Daniels. This forum offered residents the opportunity to hear from candidates seeking to represent our community at the federal, state, county and local levels.

The last debate opportunity for North Salem was on Oct. 21st, between North Salem Town Supervisor Warren Lucas and his opponent at the Hammond Museum. It was a packed event and we hope attendees paid close attention to what the candidates said and actually do, rather than rely solely on smear tactics.

Voters deserve more than broad promises. They deserve specific proposals, a clear plan for implementation and a demonstrated understanding of how those changes would affect our town.

Without that, calls for change for change's sake are simply rhetoric, not a responsible path forward for North Salem.

For us, the choice is clear. The North Salem Republican Town Committee supports Warren Lucas for re-election. Election day is Nov. 3!

-The North Salem Republican Town Committee
