NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - From the way things look now, North Salem High School senior Besnik Sejfijaj has a very bright future ahead of him.
The budding electrician -- PNW BOCES’ latest “Student of Distinction” --was presented with a medal and a certificate recognizing his “hard work, dedication, and focus” at the North Salem Board of Education’s April 9 meeting.
He was joined at the ceremony by his father, Qazim; mother, Julie; family and friends, and PNW BOCES Assistant Superintendent Dr. Gregory Brown, Career Academy Principal Jessica Miller, North Salem Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adam VanDerStuyf, and Board of Education President Kurt Guldan.
According to PNW BOCES, “not every student has committed to a career path halfway through high school,” but Sejfijaj enrolled at its Tech Center “with clarity.”
His dad, who currently works as a general contractor in Florida, and the Sejfijaj family itself have experienced “plenty of poor electrical work, some of which wasn’t up to code,” PNW BOCES said.
So when Sejfijaj first joined the Construction Electricity program, he knew that he “wanted to learn the skills and knowledge to become an electrician,” it added.
Less than two years later, as he’s getting ready to graduate and go out in the world, Sejfijaj said the program has provided him with everything he had hoped for and more.
“I think it has surpassed my expectations,” he said. “I didn’t expect that in addition to the physical work, we’d learn so much about math and English.”
According to teacher Larry Marino, Sejfijaj “approaches his schoolwork with determination and has a strong work ethic, ensuring that all his assignments are completed, not only on time, but also in a stellar manner.”
The teen’s “ability to stay focused, even when faced with challenges demonstrates his maturity and commitment to succeed,” Marino added.
Marino’s appraisal was read at the board meeting by Miller.
“Beyond his academic and practical achievements, he’s had a positive influence in the classroom, setting a strong example for his peers through his work habits and positive attitude,” he said, adding that Sejfijaj’s “can-do approach enables him to tackle any task with efficiency and strength.”
It's his “drive to succeed and the constant effort he puts into all of his work makes him truly deserving of this recognition,” Miller said.
Sejfijaj is planning to move to Florida where he hopes to find work as an electrician.
“This meant a lot to me,” the exemplary student said. “Going to BOCES and studying something I truly want to do has really been worthwhile for me.”
