Elevated mold levels prompt closure of North Salem's Ruth Keeler Library

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The Ruth Keeler Memorial Library in North Salem will remain closed until a mold problem has been resolved, library officials said this week.

The issue was identified through an independent environmental assessment, according to the library’s Tuesday, Feb. 17, press release.

The report “found elevated mold spore levels” in parts of the building and the library decided to follow recommendations that the building stay closed “while remediation is completed and post-remediation clearance testing confirms it is safe to reopen.”

“We know many in the community have heard ‘mold.’ That is accurate, and we are treating it seriously and methodically,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, library services will continue online and at a temporary off-site location.

Starting – tentatively – on Monday, Feb. 23, library patrons can pick up holds and return materials at the North Salem Community Center, which is located at 3 Owens Road in Croton Falls.

Tentative offsite service hours:
• Monday: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
• Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
• Friday: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Digital services -- including eBooks, audiobooks, and account access -- remain available 24/7 through the library’s website.

Updates will be posted on the library’s website and social media as it moves through remediation and clearance testing.
